What size are our containers?
Basically, 20’ x 8’, for more details see below.
External dimensions of a 20ft container?
Our 20ft containers are 20ft long x 8ft wide with a height of 8ft 6”. In metres this is 6.10m x 2.44m x 2.29m.
The internal dimensions of a 20ft container?
The internal dimensions of a 20ft container are 19ft 4” long x 7ft 9” wide, with a height of 7ft 10”. In metres this is 5.82m long x 2.36m wide, with a height of 2.39m.
What will fit in a 20ft container?
20ft containers offer a generous amount of storage space, with a total internal volume of 33 cubic metres. The large floor area means you can fit in a significant number of items. However, the way you pack makes a big difference.
If you're efficient with stacking, you'll maximise the space—but be careful not to crush or damage your belongings. In practice, it’s difficult to use every inch of the container, especially the space above shoulder height.
Although the full volume is 33m³, the realistic usable space is less, due to packing inefficiencies and the challenge of safely stacking items up to the full internal height of 2.39 metres. Most boxes, for example, can't be stacked that high without risking damage or making them hard to reach.
We do advise using shelving to maximise your containers space.
Making the Most of Your Storage Container
We don’t want to state the obvious but trying to plan your storage is always a good idear. It’s anoying when that important document or peice of furniture is right at the back of your unit and you have to get everything out to get it. We have also found that people generaly underestimate how much they can fit in a container and this is why we always like to keep one empty to allow for this. They look big when empty, but if you remeber your school days, the hall always looked huge untill everyone was in it, and it had a tendency to shrink. Containers do the same thing, so bear this in mind when planning your storage.
If you are using the container for long term use, you could use some kind of racking, we don’t mind if you make it out of wood as long as nothing is screwed into the side of the container and is removed if you leave. Or there are plenty of systems you can buy depending on how robust you need it.
